Washington, DC – July 15, 2022 – Physician-Led Healthcare for America (PHA) applauds a proposal released on July 14 by a key House Republican panel to improve healthcare delivery by repealing the moratorium on physician-led hospitals. The House Republican Healthy Future Task Force and its Affordability Subcommittee issued solutions to make healthcare more accessible and affordable. PHA is gratified by the panel’s inclusion of a proposal to give “patients more ways to receive high-quality care” by repealing the physician-led hospital moratorium.
“Repealing the arbitrary ban on physician-led hospitals in the Affordable Care Act would not only improve patient choice and treatment, but it would also help counter the harmful impacts of healthcare consolidation,” Fred Liss, M.D. – PHA’s president – said.
In fact, the Healthy Future Task Force recognized that repealing the physician-led hospital ban is part of the solution to “lower costs and increase choices through competition.”
Liss added: “Increasing healthcare consolidation has led to higher costs and lower quality, and both political parties have expressed concerns. Now more than ever, physician-led hospitals, which deliver outstanding quality and efficiency, are needed in our communities to inject competition.”
He cited the Healthgrades’ June 21 announcement of the hospitals receiving its 2022 Outstanding Patient Experience Award. Fifty-five of the 399 recognized hospitals were physician-led hospitals. Nationally, physician-led hospitals make up less than five percent of the nation’s total number of hospitals.
The Healthy Future Task Force is the House Republicans’ working group creating a health policy agenda blueprint for 2023 and beyond. The Task Force is chaired by Reps. Brett Guthrie (R-KY) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL). The Affordability Subcommittee is chaired by Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK), and includes Reps. Rick Allen (R-GA) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN). The Subcommittee issued proposals to improve healthcare for employees and small businesses; promote innovation and transparency; and lower costs and increase choices through competition.
