Physician Led.
Patient Preferred.
The physician-patient partnership is the most important relationship in healthcare.
No other participant in the healthcare system possesses the depth and breadth of training that physicians do. Their unparalleled clinical expertise and firsthand understanding of patient care make physicians ideally suited to guide hospital operations and ensure the highest standards of care.
Focusing on the Most Important Partnership in Healthcare
Physicians have driven innovation in healthcare throughout history — and physician-led hospitals carry that tradition forward today.
Physician ownership and management have played a foundational role in the history of American hospitals. From the late 19th century, visionary physicians like the Mayo brothers built and led institutions that prioritized patient care, innovation, and teamwork. The Mayo Clinic began as a family medical practice and evolved into a world-renowned hospital known for its collaborative, patient-centered approach and groundbreaking medical advances.
As the healthcare landscape changed, new organizational models emerged, often shifting control away from physicians and placing hospital management in the hands of non-clinical administrators. This transition diminished the direct influence of physicians in hospital leadership and decision-making.
In response, starting in the 1990s, physicians across the United States recognized the need to restore clinical expertise to hospital governance. They established a new generation of physician-led hospitals, designed to put patient care and medical judgment at the forefront. Today, more than 240 hospitals nationwide are owned and operated by physicians, continuing a distinguished tradition of physician leadership.
Why Physician-Led Hospitals Deliver Better Care
Research from leading institutions all points to the same conclusion: physician-led hospitals deliver higher-quality care, lower costs, and greater efficiency.
Outstanding Quality & Patient Experience
41% of physician-led hospitals earn top CMS patient experience ratings, compared to just 6% of other hospitals. Healthgrades awards confirm physician-led hospitals claim over 30% of top quality recognitions nationwide.

Hospital markets are becoming increasingly consolidated, and policymakers from both sides of the aisle are highlighting physician-led hospitals as a tool immediately available to inject competition.
The Harms of Healthcare Consolidation
Ongoing consolidation in the healthcare sector can reduce innovation and leave patients with fewer provider choices, reduced quality of care, and higher prices. For doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers, it can reduce employment opportunities and pathways to practice and improve medicine.
An Immediate Tool to Inject Competition
Removing the physician-owned hospital ban could help allay consumer harms caused by provider consolidation and the shrinking role of physicians in leading and designing patient care. These hospitals enhance competition in markets where hospitals may be exercising market power — vital for reducing costs and improving quality.
Physician-led hospitals are one of the last safeguards against monopolization in healthcare, injecting much-needed competition into the marketplace. — PHA’s 2025 Comment Letter to OMB
Patient-Centered Care When It Matters Most
Physician-led hospitals have proven their value during the most challenging moments — including the COVID-19 pandemic.
DHR Health: Leading Through Crisis
During COVID-19, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance — a physician-owned hospital on the Texas-Mexico border — rapidly stood up dedicated COVID-19 units, converting its rehabilitation hospital into a dedicated COVID-19 facility with more than 100 beds in under 10 days.
DHR Health also established a collaborative with 11 regional hospitals to share resources, best practices, and convalescent plasma, and was the first in the region to initiate monoclonal antibody infusion in COVID-19 positive patients.
